When the news first broke that the SEC was expanding to include Missouri and Texas A&M, I had objections. With Missouri, my objections were their geographic location (How are you going to add Mizzou to the SEC East?!? Don’t you own a map? They’re now the 3rd western-most school in the SEC.), their mascot (Don’t we already have enough Tigers in the SEC?), and that they just weren’t good enough (Shows how much I know!). With A&M, on the other hand, I could not object based on their level of talent. They were a good, solid football school with their own unique traditions and a tradition of winning. My objection was with their school colors.
Maroon and white. Hmm… Seems we already had a school that attired themselves in maroon and white apparel. It seems to me that this could lead to some confusion in certain situations. During a highlight reel of SEC games, you’d better have a big-screen and look carefully to know whom you are watching. And what about when the two teams play each other? That’s way too much maroon! If you’re at the game as I was when A&M demolished us last year, you have too look a lot more closely to determine if those in line in front and behind you in the concessions line are friend or foe.
I hate to even speculate how this year’s game at College Station in going to play out for us. Yes, we have the defense to keep them from running up a ton of points. Yes, their defense is bad enough to allow us to find the endzone a few times. State does have a chance, but I’m somewhat expecting it will go as it has gone with most other teams A&M has played. A&M will most likely be able to put enough points on the board to edge out all the points we manage to put on their defense. I pray I’m wrong.
Either way, though, in the SEC, we were here first. Johnny-Football-come-lately A&M will just have to recognize…
