The Problem with Perspective and State

It’s an interesting concept. I think most would agree that everyone should have a good perspective on all things, whether it’s life, politics, religion or whatever else you can think of. I also believe most would think perspective is something you should have when it comes to sports and being a fan of sports. We all know just how difficult it can be though when it comes to our favorite teams, especially those of us who are long suffering Mississippi State fans.

So that is going to be the primary focus of my writing. I want to try to bring proper perspective when it comes to how we should view our program as fans and alumni. We live in such a world of “What’s Next?” that we often forget to consider where we are and where we have come from. There is such a longing among the Mississippi State fanbase to be a legitimate contender that we might often forget a lot of the hurdles that we need to overcome.

It’s also what we are dealing with Dan Mullen now. The fanfare he was receiving after the 2010 season has faded, and many have placed him squarely on the Hot Seat. Is it fair or unfair? I honestly think it is way too early to say at this point. We are 5 games into the season that most people didn’t have us doing any better than 6-6 to start the season. We have looked good at times and horrific at others. There are lots of things that need to be improved, but if you believe firmly and unequivocally that he should be fired, than you may have lost perspective.

Understand this, I’m not saying that he doesn’t deserve to be scrutinized. I do believe that a lot of fans have already cast their vote, and they want him gone. They may end up being right, but I think he has at least earned the right to let the entire season play out.

So that is my goal through this blog, to provide perspective. You may not agree with my perspective, but I think it is always a good idea to take a step back and see where we came from, where we are going, and what it will take to get us where we want to be. I’m super excited to be on this blog and I hope you guys enjoy what you read. And as always, Hail State!
