Source: Fences at Dudy Noble Will Be Moved In

We were told today by a very knowledgeable source close to the baseball program that right field at Dudy Noble will be moved in 16 feet. The fence will connect in right center at the 374 mark.

I think this is a very strange move especially after the outstanding performance of our young pitching staff this year and the underwhelming power hitting but this has been a topic of discussion for awhile now. The Dude has never been a hitters ball park with center field at 390 ft. One thing is for sure, this will favor left hand hitters with the right field fence at 310′ compared to 326′ as it is now. Left field will remain at 330 ft in the corner.

This raises the question if left field is being left alone (no pun intended) because of the left field lounge? The seats there have been passed down from generation to generation. Moving in the fence in left field would take away space for the homemade grandstands that is the tradition of left field lounge. Right field on the other hand is mainly a student hang out spot with the grass hill and the extended deck by the fence.

There could be more plans for a student grand stand out in right field but this would be a mistake in my opinion. Extending chair back seats down the first base line should be the main priority if you ask me. This will be marketed as allowing more fan space but having enough room has never been a problem, especially lately given the size of the crowds even with our recent success the last two years.

No matter what happens they need to allow students to keep their grill space on the deck along the fence. I have some good memories of grilling out in right field with my friends and heckling the opposing team’s right fielder about information from his facebook account the whole game. It was all in good fun and we even ended up taking a couple of them out to bar later. All in name of helping MSU baseball mind you.

I trust John Cohen and Scott Stricklin’s decision, but I hope this move doesn’t end up taking away from the rich tradition of Dudy Noble. Whatever they do they should have the fans best interest in mind.  Mainly the students because they are the ones that come to the games. John Cohen also better start recruiting more left hand hitters and pitchers.
